Hallo type 44 friends.
I live i Copenhagen and have an Audi 100 2.3 1990 NF2.
I am going on holiday tomorrow 3 weeks in Germany and France. I want to get some new wheel bearings for the old girl, and have this job done in Germany.
My questions is
1: is this a standard procedure or do i have to go to an Audi/wv garage.
2: can anybody give me some addresses to an free garage that is familiar with the type 44 ? I will travel in west and south Germany.
3: I will maybe also replace the Querlenker. There are 2 models an cheap and an expensive. 18 or 19 mm konus. How do i know what model i have.

Are you talking about front or rear axle wheel bearings? If it's rear, and you happen to come near heidelberg, i might be able to help you with that.
Never done front wheel bearings, cant help you with that. In any case, both are fairly standard procedures and should be doable by any garage with a monkey that has half a brain left. If you're afraid they could run into any trouble, go to http://sowirdsgemacht.com/ and print out the according pages
Your typ 44 should have the 18mm conus wishbones (querlenker). Watch out, dont buy the cheap stuff from ebay. That could result in such a picture when you travel back home:

If the dust cover rubber thingies on the ball joint arent defective yet, its better to overhaul the original wishbones. You can get new dust-cover-rubber-thingies
from your local audi dealer for about 10€ for one wishbone, the inner rubber-bearing thats inside the support frame can be replaced as well.

it is the front wheel bearings, but i will try to change front and back tyres to day and se if it will change anything regarding the sound i am hearing. When the wheels are of the car ,i will check the bearings in the back. I checked them one year ago, they felt ok, but that was one year ago. I have the bearings for the back wheel.
When i have changed the wheel back to front, i will go for a test drive, and in the same time i will try not to use the brakes, stop and feel if the federbein is hot where the bearing is seated.
I have the so wird gemacht and the Hayenes service manual, and i am normally doing 95% of all repairs and service my self and like it. Fantastic Car by the way.

All i got is a rancid old 100 Avant with the NF2 engine and 320.000km on the clock.
You could always try to jack up the car and spin the wheels by hand. It should sound smooth and quiet. The front wheels might produce a little more noise since they move the differential in the gearbox when you spin them.
One thing just crossed my mind ... Changing the rear wheel bearings can be quite the pain in the ass too, since you have to remove the break caliper mounts, which are bolted on with 2 Inbus screws. Long story short: i had to use ye good olde FLEX to cut off the screws heads, and then get new break caliper mounts off the junkyard . On both sides.

I have had my callipers and mounts taken of many time. My rear discs keeps rusting, so i have just removed some rust/dirt with sand paper. Couldn't hear anything with the wheels free spinning and a screwdriver on the federbeine. Took the car for a little test drive and noise was a little les. tjeckede the temperature by hand on the lower part of the federbeine and there was a very little temperature difference to the top of the federbeine, but very little.
The noise is below the noise from the tires and wind noise. I will take a longer test drive later.
