Hi there,
just look from the left side at the block of your engine, direktly under the zylinderhead (?) you will find between sparkplug two and three a plain part, often a bit rusty, where the engine-number is stamped in.
If you wont find it, please give us some details of your engine (HP, ccm³) we`ll be able to find out your enginetype.
Regards
Jens

Hi,
by the "Engine identification letter" that is in front of the engine serial number. The 4- and 5-cylinder engines have that on the left side (driving direction) of the engine block (?). (actually there is a combination of letters, like "NF", "MC" ...)
Once you have that you can identify the engine (as it says
A good start is this excellent german
documentation:

Topic is available in english as well :)
Hi,
the already mentioned topic "engine types" is available in english as well:
http://babel.altavista.com/babelfish/tr ... Motortypen
Since this is a auto-translation, it might be a bit rough. But it'll be ok and sufficient to determine the engine type a it's looks. Otherwise you an of course just follow Jens's hint an loate the engine's number.
Hint: The whole Audi100 Self Documentation Project with about 800 topics in (rough) english is available here:
