An AUDI m/44 - fan in Sweden here folks!

Dear fellow m/44 - fans!
My name is Tony, now driving my second one in this series.
It´s a very well (for swedish conditions regarding snow, salt and sand

) looked after one but has now reached 250 000 km.
Everything is great except for the infamous window regulator cables
at the drivers door...
I´ve been a professional engine mechanics, mostly on MB and AUDI ones.
I also have a periode of almost 10 years to look back at as a production manager IN the production at the Torslanda plant of Volvo Car Corp.
That´s about it for now!
Kindest regards
Tony

Hi Tony, and a hearty welcome from all of us!
What do you mean by "window regulator cables" - the electrical cables for the window winders, or the actual (mechanical, Bowden-type) cable that opens and closes the window?
In the first case, the break in the electric cable is normally in the rubber sleeve between the driver's door and the chassis. This is where the cables normally fatigue. One should remove the fatigued section of cable and solder a new section in.
In the second case (Bowden cable has broken), the window winder can actually be fitted with a new Bowden cable, if the rest of the mechanical and electrical assembly is still intact. I did this recently on my Audi (type C4): I took the broken cable to a cable supplier, who cut a new cable to the right length, and fitted it with knobs (end-buttons). I then installed it by myself.
Regards,
Mark
P.S.: please show any pictures that you may have of your Audi.

Hi there Mark!
Thank´s a lot for yor kind and asking reply! Much appreciated up here in the North!
This is great or what!?
A forum just for the fans of a special car or questions about them!
I´ve understand that depending on what side of the Atlantic you are sitting on the same part of the car sometimes have very different names for them.
What I was trying to put in words was the main electric cable between the
relay plate and the switches in the handle of the drivers door!
Thank´s for the info, but just as for a lot of people probably around the world (are these cars as affected by this cable/wire problems in warmer countries as in the cold ones..?) almost 20 out of the whole set (27 if I´m right) of cables were in one way or the other wearing signs of the age:
insulation cracked at several spots and or totally cut of.
I will await the sun and do my very best to post a couple of pics!
(Am I right here: YOU are waiting for the summer and WE are facing the first snow!?)
Thank´s a lot once again for your interest in my car!
Kindest regards
Tony

Hi Turbaxel!
Also a thank you very much for your kind reply!
This is a start of the membership that I was hoping for!
I will post the pics when the sun has come back for me (and the digital camera). They always get better with the light from the sun.
Kindest regards & with thank´s for your interest in my m/44

Hello Tony,
4Circles hat geschrieben:I´ve understand that depending on what side of the Atlantic you are sitting on the same part of the car sometimes have very different names for them.
Or even the Mediterranean...

(You and I are on the same side of the Atlantic

)
Quite correct - for me, it was also difficult when I first joined this Forum, because I was not familiar with many of the German names for car parts, functions, etc..
4Circles hat geschrieben:(are these cars as affected by this cable/wire problems in warmer countries as in the cold ones..?)
Well, in my C4, which is a 1992 model and has done 262 Mm, not a single cable has fatigued yet. All electrical functions on the doors are still working properly. So I think that this problem of cable fatigue is worse in colder climates. 20 out of 27 - WOW...
4Circles hat geschrieben:(Am I right here: YOU are waiting for the summer and WE are facing the first snow!?)
Yes, you're right. I am awaiting summer - which means, amongst others, that my air-conditioning needs to be re-gassed.
Regards from South Africa,
Mark

Mario20V!
Thank´s a lot for your kind reply!
I´ve been driving a lot in Germany over the years, so I know pretty well without a map where you are!
About your name:
Is it
the car in the picture in the field to the left..?
If so, a super overhaul for the shows in Germany?
About the 20V: were this modell delivered with and without turbo or just without = 4 valves/cylinder..?
And if without the turbo - is this engine FAR better and more powerful
in the lower part of the rpm range than the traditional one, for example, the NF 5 cylinder 10 valve one that I have in my late 1991 m/44 AUDI 100 2,3E?
Can you offer "me" a nice pic of the engine please?
Kindest regards
Tony

Hi Tony,
as far as I understood your problem, Mark already pointed out the correct solution. You just have to check the according multi fibered, multi colored cable from the driver's side a-pillar to the driver's door.
To do so, you are best off, if you remove any cover plates on the door itself and the lower a-pillar. Then you can use a digital multi meter (switched to about 200 Ohms resistance) to check each and every fiber with and w/o the door open/closed. You can most easily connect the DMM to the fiber by using two fine needles - one in the door, one in the a-pillar.
If you find a non conducting fiber in one particular position of the door, you can replace it by soldering a external fiber in parallel. If more then one fiber is damaged, use a so called computer flat cable with several fibres.
I hope this helps. The Audi 100 Self Doku might help you even more:
http://audi100.selbst-doku.de
Use the "english version" link in the top menu bar, the klick on the Audi 100 image. Then klick on "Electrical connection" and finally on "Kabelbruch in the rubber sleeve of the door". Here's the direct link:
http://babel.altavista.com/babelfish/tr ... DerT%25fcr
Please remember, this is an babelfish autotranslated version of the SD, but I hope it'll help you anyway.
Good luck,
turbaxel

Turbaxel!
Thank you for this post!
I´ve done exactly (except for the computer cable!) what you did mentioned about the looking for and testing for the problem

!
I´ve used my Fluke industrial DMM for this with some extra cables from another car just for the reason not to risk to use cables with too small area during the testing procedure with the power on. The ohm test doesn´t need that area, that´s right!
For the moment I have the electric wiring to the left on the floor extracted from the door and back to a "working condition" (the window stopped in the most down position...) and I and our doughter are quite sick in the flu since almost 10 days, BUT

when back in the shoes I´ll replace EVERY cable that indicates ANY signs of "age" for a brand new one with as many single copper leads - a stranded one seems to be the correct word after a search in Google, as possible.
For the moment the LEDs for 2 out of 4 switches at the doors are dead = no red light is coming from the switshes.
I´ve spent hours to find an electric wiring diagram for the year 1990/1991 as my VAG AUDI original thick (!) manual from North America (Ebay

) is for my 1985 100 2.2E.
I´ve found some last night that I will check out against the colours of the cables.
+++
If a german owner are able to help me with a high resolution picture by a camera from a manual of this and all the relays and their numbers on the top and what they are for, I would appreciate that offer and his time very much!
+++
Why I ask for a german member OR a swede, thank you, is that our cars
meant for these two markets should be almost the same, right..?
Kindest regards & with thank´s to all of U nice members out there!
Tony

Hi Tony,
I think you're quite on track for the repair, except for the wiring/relais diagrams, maybe.
I've sent you a PN (personal note)

Mario20V and Turbaxel!
I´ve went to the site recommended by Turbaxel and this is some engine, this 20V one!
It looks almost as wide over the valve cover as the famous Twin-Cam (and I love this one in the E version!) M110 2,8 L engine from the W114/W116/W126 of Mercedes Benz of the 70s and 80s, right..?
Thank´s for this link!
Greetings
Tony

Tony,
you've got a defect LED in the door's electrical window switch. Here's how to battle it:

Thank you!
Yes I would like it to be...
I KNOW that the LEDs are still working, and glowing to 100% in the dark.
The problem is that some cable/-s is/are put together in less than 100% original (some are soldered together by VAG) "on the floor"!
In the dark = after ~ 19:00 on the 65th parallel, they used to glow superbly.
Almost 50% of the total amount of cables/wires are easy to get together again as the outer diameter or colour tells one how to, but some are quite more difficult which means that the possible combinations arise a exponentially...
The darkness will be my friend when I´m cured again!
Thank´s for the thought and link though friend!
Regards
Tony
