Enjoyed?

I love it. Good, smooth job, you've done. Respect.

I'd do it that way, if mine wouldn't be a daily driver.

But one thing bugs me. ;) You've got the car, but you don't have a means to drive it to it's limits in the us. Dosen't that bother you, a little, at least? :)

Hi Stephen!

Nice car!
Good job!

Is the Interior Black or Brown?

How much HP do you have now?

Sorry for my terrible English.

Hey!
Great pictures! Espeacially the white colour looks great on the 5000. Is there a big Audi 500 community in your town?

Exellent work, Stephen!

I´m specially interested in the 3" DP - need to contact you later for details (lots of questions).

Is that the Volvo spoiler lip underneath your font bumper?

I still have one spare MC engine bottom end laying around - looks like i got some good inspiration here for building up another potential engine... :)

Welcome & all the best,

Mark, Mike, Daemonarch: Thanks for the kind words.

turbaxel: Yeah we don't have the speed limits you guys do but the car has seen 155 mph+ here on a deserted highway late at night a couple of times. I can only dream of driving the car on the Autobahn.

Mario: No idea on HP yet. I have yet to dyno it and I don't like to speculate HP figures. The interior is black leather with dark brown carpet and dash. The sport seats are from a 200 I parted out. The original interior was tan.

Lutz: No there really isn't too much interest in the type44's here in America. Most Americans like the B3/B4 or S cars it seems.

Karl: Thanks. I've seen your website. Nice car also.

Olli: Yeah it is a Volvo lip spoiler. Been using it for 5+ years. I have a different one I will put on soon.

I'll post some more pics soon.

Hi Steve,

I also just can give congratulations to your work - very nice car - respect!

But - I have another question:

What camera is working here for these pics?
They are absolutely fantastic!

It's not that legendary it sounds..
Too much traffic, too much unfriendly people on the road, i think many of that "autobahn-tourists" who came to run this roads were disappointed later..

Please excuse my awful english.

I agree with Daemonarch! There are only a few "Highways" with low traffic, especially at night. And of course our roads are "crowded" with road works...ain´t so funny..

Better take a ride on the "Nürburgring" :-D

Hi Steve,

awesome car and great restoration skills ! respect !

I think your sunroof needs some adjustment on the rear side ? In my opinion the rear side should be raised a few milimeters to avoid wind noise.

Welcome and greetings

accepdance to Daemonarch post.

In the Rhein-Main area (near Frankfurt) its anyways difficult to go fast for a longer time especially at Daytime between 7:00am and 6:00pm from Monday to Friday, before or after this times its a bit easier.

At some parts on the Autobahn there are speedtraps and changing speedlimits mountet
(together as well like on Autobahn A3 "Katzenbuckel" or "Elzer Berg").
(Many with out any sense IMHO because the Autobahn is straigt for a few KM with 3 lanes for example.)

A problem as well are some drivers, the don´t look whats comming from behind (you have the advice on the mirror ;) ) and pull over.
Or the left lane creeper. (in germany its only allowed to pass on the left lane.)

same here in the USA, but no one around here follows that rule, well at least in New York they don't. it makes for some interesting driving. and if the speed limit is posted at 55mph that means drivers are going at 65-70mph.

Hi,

around the Cologne area (where i live), there´s almost no "free" Autobahn without speed limit to 100 or 120km/h. In practice it´s even slower during daytime, as there ist so much traffic or often traffic jams. Here´s one of the most frequented traffic point in Germany (railway and cars).

Down south of Cologne that soon changes remarkable.
When going to the direction of Bonn (some 40km south of Cologne), there´s a rather low frequented Autobahn (A565) with mostly no speed limit at all in both directions. That´s actually my favourite "test drive lane", especially after sunset or during weekend.

Here you can go WOT and this Autobahn is also iluminated from above. :)

In general, people don´t care very much of those speed limits on Autobahn, as long as there is no construction work limiting the speed down to 80km/h.
Where there is 120, people go 140 or even up to 160, where there is 100, people go 120, etc...

Normally this works out without gettin´pulled over by the police, as they often do not show up at all. But you can never be sure, since Autobahnpolizei is patrolling with "civil" cars.

A driver´s paradise? Sure, if there´s not to much traffic, but often times, it´s nothing but theory.

Regards,
Olli

In the USA it all depends on the following, where you are (State, road), which way you get ticketed (state, local, or county police, or camera) speed that you where caught doing, and most importantly; if you have a PBA card (its a "save your ass" or "get out of jail free card").

now as far as what happens, well this is how it works in New York State; there is the typical fine (using a scale, cost based on speed) then depending on how fast you were going it may cost you a point or more on your license. and if you were drunk or where driving in a reckless manor, that would increase the consequences.

Hi Steve!

This is very nice post of you!
Great pictures, especially those of the engine overhaul!

By the way, what have you done to the engine...?
The cylinders look like you have "just" had them honed or them resurfaced with a Flexhone!?

It´s marvellous, that after - and I´ve seen it myself -
350 000 km / 220 000 miles - there are almost no wear at all in the top of the cylinders! :)

The car looks so "low" - are there an aftermarket set instead of the one from AUDI on the car now..? :-D

Kindest regards
Tony

Hi Tony.

The cylinders were rehoned.

The original engine had 300,000+ miles on it. I could still see the original cross hatching...

For suspension I am running Bilstein sport struts with Eibach springs from a S4/S6.

Hi Steve,

If I understand correctly from your picture, you cut the square profile out of the front cross-valence (Querträger) to fit the lower connection of the intercooler?

I would expect that such a cut would drastically reduce the stability of the whole front section of the chassis?

And even though you have fitted the strut brace (Domstrebe), what would happen in a frontal impact? The cross-valence would collapse like a piece of cardboard... Not so?

Puzzled regards,
Mark

that is the way we have to think about stuff like that in Germany. If we would cut bodyparts like you did, the car wouldn't pass state inspection, no matter if it works or not. I worked for 18 month in NYS as an auto mechanic and I even had my NYS inspector liscense. There were some rust buckets I did not want to drive down the road, but they passed inspection.

So we are allowed to do 160mph but we have are hard time to change anything at our cars, that is not stock.

And we all live in free countries...or something like that.

Hi there,

Here in ZA, the inspection is also quite leniant. People (and their cars) get away with amazing things.

But that's not the point I wanted to make. Whether a modification passes the inspection or not, I would never modify (cut away) the structural parts on my cars.

Mark
